“Heb Dhuw heb ddym, Dhuw a digon”
Can’t read it? I can’t either… it’s (apparently) old Welsh, and it comes from the motto on the Davis coat of arms.
Every few years I get curious about things like that and yesterday morning I googled the Davis coat of arms. I was pretty shocked and a little proud about what I found as the motto.
“Heb Dhuw heb ddym, Dhuw a digon” translated is: Without God without anything, God is enough.
That basically means:
Without God you have Nothing, With God you have Everything
This struck me like a bolt of lightning because this is basically how I’ve tried to live my life.
Example:
When I first worked as a laborer, I had to wrestle with this “meaningless” job. I had an important conversation with a good theological friend. He pointed out to me that every meaningless job is a service to society. I was in fact serving God, not man in my labor. This was a huge relief, and it motivated me to do a good job.
Another Example:
Later on, when I went into business for myself I felt more than a little twinge of guilt that I was not “in the ministry.” So many other people in my family were, and here I was “making money” … which was the great evil.
It took years of reading and Bible study to get over that. To clear the way so that I could, in good conscience, make money and still be a good Christian.
Had I known this, “without God, nothing; with God, everything” I could have been more at peace with it all.
Developing my relationship with God through spiritual practices like Bible reading, journaling and meditation has been critical to my growth over the years.

“Without God without anything, God is enough.” Fits me well as I’ve come from a wayward past to serving The Almighty.
However, personally I would use Elohim or YHVH instead of God.
